This is a fixed troubleshooting tree, not an AI audit. Your answers decide which check comes next.
Diagnose before you try to improve your Google ranking
“Rank higher” sounds like one problem, but it can describe several incompatible jobs. A page blocked from indexing needs a technical correction. An indexed page with no impressions needs a relevance and discovery investigation. A page already averaging position three may need more useful clicks rather than another ranking project. A local business in Google Maps belongs to a separate local search system. Applying the same ten-point SEO checklist to all four cases hides the first decision that matters.
This diagnostic therefore asks one question at a time. Every answer selects a fixed branch; no language model guesses a cause from the URL. The final receipt repeats your evidence and names the next three actions. Go back, change an answer and the same inputs will always reach the same result. That makes the tool useful as a repeatable triage process, not an automatic audit pretending it has crawled a site it never fetched.
URL Inspection is the first dependable indexing check
For a page you control, Google Search Console’s URL Inspection report is the best first fork. It can show information about Google’s indexed version, the selected canonical and a reason why a URL is excluded. Its live test answers a different question: whether Google can access the page now. A successful live test does not prove that the page is currently indexed, and an indexed status does not guarantee that it will rank for a particular search. The tool asks for the indexed status first so those two signals are not silently merged.
The exclusion reason changes the repair. An unintended noindex directive must be
removed from the HTML or HTTP header. A robots rule must allow crawling. A duplicate status
requires a decision about whether Google selected the correct canonical, not an automatic
demand to index every duplicate URL. A server or redirect error belongs ahead of content
editing. The diagnosis links to Google’s corresponding documentation and asks for a new live
test after the material correction.
What the prepared Google site searches can and cannot tell you
Without Search Console access, the page prepares several public searches in new tabs. One
looks for the quoted page URL. Another restricts results to the entered URL prefix. The
domain check is followed by exact HTTPS host checks with and without www.
Google’s own documentation says a domain-wide site: search can include
subdomains, while exact URL-prefix forms can produce different sets. That makes the variants
useful when a site has accidentally split signals across hosts or protocols.
Those searches are deliberately labeled as clues. Google also says the operator is not exhaustive and that a URL can be indexed without appearing in this public search. Its result count is therefore not used as “pages indexed,” a site quality score or a comparison with a competitor. If the exact page is missing or the result is ambiguous, the tree stops at the honest next action: verify the URL in Search Console rather than declaring it deindexed.
Why the old backlink search is not one of the buttons
Google retired its old public backlink operator as a dependable link lookup. Keeping a familiar but nonfunctional button would make the interface feel comprehensive while sending the investigation in the wrong direction. The relevant branch instead opens Search Console’s Links report. Google describes that report as a sample of internal and external links, not a complete link index, so the diagnosis never converts one count into a confident explanation for ranking.
Internal links still matter as a practical action because they help people and crawlers find the right page and communicate the relationship between pages. The result only recommends them when the page is indexable and the query–page match is real. It does not recommend a bulk link campaign, sell links or assign an invented “authority score.”
How the position, impression and click questions are used
Once the page is indexed and has impressions, the tree asks for three numbers from the same Search Console page filter and date range. Average position selects one of four broad review bands: 1–3, 4–10, 11–20 or below 20. Impressions describe measured visibility and clicks describe visits attributed by the report. CTR is calculated as clicks divided by impressions and shown on the receipt.
The calculation is exact, but its interpretation is intentionally restrained. There is no universal good CTR for every query and position. Brand demand, device, location, search features and intent can change what people see and whether a click is useful. A position is also an average of appearances rather than a fixed daily slot. The 4–20 bands are opportunity screens: they decide which rows deserve review, not how many places a page will move.
Use an equivalent period to identify what changed
A current snapshot cannot describe a decline by itself. The final question therefore asks whether impressions, CTR or average position changed most compared with an equivalent earlier period. Equivalent means the same duration, search type and active filters, preferably aligned by weekdays. If no comparison exists, the tool calls today’s settings a baseline instead of inventing a trend.
A falling impression total leads to a visibility and demand investigation. Continuing impressions with lower CTR leads to the queries and visible search results. A worse average position leads to the exact rows that lost ground, with clicks used to prioritize them. The Search Console report analyzer can read matching current and previous CSV exports locally, keep Query and Page data separate, and turn those differences into a scored action queue. If you first need to verify an unfamiliar delimiter or column shape, the CSV viewer handles that narrower file check. When Search Console visibility is stable and the suspected problem is page delivery instead, export the separate lab report and use the PageSpeed Insights and Lighthouse analyzer; performance evidence should not be inferred from impression and click columns.
Organic results and Google Maps need different evidence
A local pack or Maps result is not diagnosed with a web page’s average organic position. Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Distance alone means that a business can appear differently to two searchers running the same query from different places. The local branch therefore points to Business Profile completeness, categories, address or service area, hours, reviews and location-aware checking.
Structured data is another separate layer. It can help Google understand eligible page information, but it is not a ranking guarantee and many result types have strict policies. The FAQ schema generator, for example, creates valid FAQPage JSON-LD while explaining that ordinary commercial sites are no longer eligible for Google’s FAQ rich results. Likewise, changing a URL to insert a keyword is not a default ranking fix. When a genuinely new page needs a readable path, the slug generator solves that publishing task without rewriting an existing indexed address behind your back.
The diagnosis stays in this browser
The entered URL, answers and numbers remain in this tab. CreatorValet does not fetch the page, connect a Google account or upload Search Console data. A request leaves the page only when you deliberately open a prepared Google search, Search Console or an official help page. The opened service then receives the query or URL needed for that check, just as if you had typed it there yourself.
That privacy boundary is also a capability boundary. The tool cannot see the result in the new tab, verify that you own the property or confirm that an edit was deployed. You report what you observed by choosing the next answer. The receipt is a transparent record of those choices and a prioritized place to continue — not a secret score, an AI opinion or a promise that one action will put a page on the first page of Google.
Questions
Can a Google site search prove that a page is indexed?
No. It is a quick public clue, not a complete index report. Google says a page can be absent from a site-restricted search even when it is indexed. The definitive check is URL Inspection in the verified Search Console property, which can show the indexed version, run a live test and explain exclusions.
Why are there separate checks with and without www?
A domain-wide site search can include subdomains, while an exact URL-prefix search can narrow the host and protocol. Google documents that the exact www and non-www forms may return different sets. That can expose an unexpected host split, but the result count is never treated as a reliable index total.
Why does this diagnosis not use Google’s old backlink search operator?
Google retired that operator as a dependable way to find links. This tool sends backlink investigations to Search Console’s Links report instead. The report itself is also a sample rather than a complete link index, so it belongs in a broader investigation and not as automatic proof of a cause.
Is ranking in Google Maps diagnosed the same way as a normal web page?
No. Google describes local results as a separate system influenced mainly by relevance, distance and prominence. Choosing the Maps branch therefore leads to Business Profile checks rather than asking for a web page’s average organic position.
Does an average position of 8 mean my page was always eighth?
No. Search Console position is an average based on the topmost result credited in each appearance. It can combine different queries, locations, devices and result layouts. The tool uses broad position bands to choose an investigation, then keeps impressions, clicks and period changes visible beside the number.
Is my URL or Search Console data sent to CreatorValet?
No Search Console data is connected or uploaded. The URL and answers remain in this tab. Google only receives a query when you deliberately click one of the prepared search links, and Search Console opens only when you click its button.
