How to crop a PDF

Cropping a PDF can mean either hiding the area beyond a new page boundary or removing that area from the file. Those results look identical in a viewer. They are not equally safe to send: an ordinary crop may leave every hidden word and image recoverable.

If you only need to remove scanner borders or make every page the same visible size, changing the boundary is usually right. If a margin contains a customer name, an internal note, or any other material the recipient must not recover, use a crop that deletes the excluded area. The browser-based PDF cropper offers both choices before it changes the document. It runs the operation in the current tab, without creating an account or transferring the PDF to a server.

Crop a PDF locally in your browser

This route is the same on Windows, macOS, iPhone, and Chromebook:

1. Open the PDF crop tool and choose the document from your device.
2. Drag a frame around the part of the page you want to keep. For repeatable margins, enter exact values in inches, millimeters, or points instead.
3. Choose the pages the boundary should affect. Check pages with different sizes or orientations rather than assuming one frame will fit all of them.
4. Pick Trim when hidden content may remain in the file, or Trim and delete when it must be removed.
5. Download the new PDF and open that download to inspect the edges.

The file picker may resemble an upload dialog because browsers use the same picker for local files and uploads. Choosing a file does not by itself send it anywhere. Here, the PDF is read, changed, and rebuilt by code running on your device. No login is involved, and there is no desktop package or mobile app to install.

That distinction matters most for documents that should not be handed to a third party merely to adjust their borders: contracts, statements, medical records, and work files governed by an employer’s upload rules. Browser processing also makes the route available on managed machines where installing a PDF editor is blocked.

On a Mac, Preview is the shortest built-in route

For an ordinary visual crop, Preview already has what you need. Open the PDF, display the markup controls, choose a rectangular selection, and drag around the area to retain. Use the Crop command after the selection is in place, then save a copy under a new name so the original remains available.

Preview’s warning is important: content beyond the chosen boundary may still exist in the document. That is normal PDF behavior, not a failed crop. Use Preview for white margins, printer marks, or layout cleanup. Do not treat its visual result as proof that confidential material has been erased.

The phrase “crop PDF in Preview” sometimes leads to a second surprise: cropping one selected thumbnail does not promise that a mixed stack of portrait, landscape, Letter, and A4 pages will all receive sensible boundaries. Inspect the thumbnails and work on the intended pages. When many pages need the same measured inset, the browser route is faster because one set of four margin values can be applied across the chosen range.

On Windows, Edge displays PDFs but does not crop them

Microsoft Edge can open, annotate, print, and rotate the view of a PDF. It does not provide a built-in page-cropping command that saves a new boundary into the document. Adobe Acrobat can, but that turns a small edit into a desktop installation and, depending on the edition, a paid workflow.

If neither fits, open the local cropper in Edge, choose the file, set the frame, and save the result. The operation still takes place on the Windows computer; “in a browser” does not mean “on a website’s server.” This is also the practical route on a locked-down office PC where an administrator controls software installation.

On iPhone, choose the PDF from Files

Safari can pass a document from iCloud Drive or On My iPhone to the same in-tab tool. Tap the file area, select the PDF in Files, adjust the boundary, and download the result. Safari places the new document in Downloads in the Files app, unless you have changed the browser’s download location.

A screenshot followed by a crop is not an equivalent shortcut. It captures only the pixels visible on the phone, may include interface furniture, and produces an image rather than a PDF. Text selection, links, forms, and additional pages disappear. Cropping the document itself retains a PDF and lets you choose whether the retained page stays structural or is redrawn for real deletion.

On a Chromebook, the browser is the local application

ChromeOS can display a PDF and print it, but its viewer is not a full page editor. A browser tool therefore fills the same role that Preview fills on a Mac without requiring a Linux app, an Android install, or an account with an online PDF service. Pick the file from local storage or Google Drive through the system picker; selecting a Drive-backed file may cause ChromeOS to download it to the device, but the crop operation itself remains in the tab.

Large PDFs may take longer on a phone or low-memory Chromebook because that device is doing the work. Keep the tab open until the download is ready. A slower local job is still different from waiting for a remote service to receive and process the document.

How to check what the crop actually removed

First, open the downloaded file rather than relying on the preview shown before saving. Check a page near the beginning and one near the end, plus every page whose orientation differs. A page can have the correct visible size while its content is shifted, so inspect the position of a known heading or border as well as the dimensions.

For non-sensitive cleanup, that visual check is enough. For confidential material, try to select or search for a distinctive phrase that sat beyond the frame. If it can still be found, the content was hidden rather than deleted. The delete option should instead return pages with the excluded strip absent from the rebuilt page. Because rebuilding as pixels also removes selectable text, links, comments, and form controls from affected pages, use it only where real removal is worth that cost.

Cropping is for material outside a rectangular boundary. If the thing to remove sits in the middle of content you need to keep, use PDF redaction. If entire pages should go, delete those PDF pages rather than shrinking their edges until nothing is visible.
