How to download your own YouTube videos

Use YouTube Studio for one uploaded video or Google Takeout for a complete channel export, then check that every archive part arrived safely.

There are two official ways to download videos you uploaded to YouTube. Use YouTube Studio when you need one or a few videos. Use Google Takeout when you want every uploaded video from a channel or need an archive you can keep.

Neither route is a way to download somebody else’s upload. YouTube’s download instructions say that Studio downloads only apply to videos you uploaded. Offline viewing of other videos is a separate YouTube Premium feature, not a file export.

If the upload has already been removed and no local backup is available, use the separate guide to checking deleted YouTube videos in public archives. It distinguishes an archived watch page, metadata, thumbnail, captions, and actual video bytes; finding one layer does not prove that the next was preserved.

Download one video from YouTube Studio

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Select Content in the left panel.
  3. Find the video, open its menu, and select Download.
  4. Save the file somewhere outside your browser’s temporary Downloads list, and open it before treating the download as a backup.

Studio supplies an MP4 in 720p or 360p depending on the size of the video. That makes it convenient for re-use, but it is not necessarily the original file you uploaded. If the original resolution or container matters, check your camera, editor, project drive, and existing backups before assuming the Studio copy is the master.

The Download command may be unavailable when a video has been removed, has a copyright or Community Guidelines strike, uses a pre-approved audio track, or has already been downloaded five times in the previous 24 hours. Those are documented Studio restrictions; a third-party downloader does not turn them into permission to retrieve a different copy.

Download every upload with Google Takeout

Start at Google Takeout. Takeout begins with many Google products selected, so use Deselect all before selecting YouTube and YouTube Music. Open All YouTube data included and keep only the categories you actually need. For a video backup, include videos; add playlists, captions, comments, or history only when you intend to archive those records too.

Then choose Next step and set the delivery, frequency, file type, and maximum archive size. A one-time ZIP export sent by email is the simplest portable choice for most people. Google may split data that exceeds the selected size into several archives, so “the download finished” is not the same as “every part arrived.”

Google’s Takeout documentation says exported YouTube videos are supplied in their original format or as MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio. The same documentation recommends opening Takeout exports on a desktop computer and using the included archive_browser.html for information about the files in the archive.

Choose the correct YouTube channel first

The most common missing-video problem happens before the export is created. A Google Account can manage more than one YouTube channel, and a channel may belong to a Brand Account.

Open YouTube, switch to the channel that owns the uploads, and only then start Takeout. If you have several Brand Accounts, repeat the export for each channel you want to preserve. Google explicitly calls out the wrong Brand Account as a reason uploaded videos may appear to be missing from Takeout.

For a school or work account, an administrator can disable exports for some products. If YouTube is absent from Takeout or the export controls are unavailable, check the account type before troubleshooting your browser.

Verify the export before deleting anything

Keep the original archive files unchanged until the extracted copy has been checked.

  1. Confirm that every numbered ZIP or TGZ part named in the Takeout download is present.
  2. Record each archive’s filename and byte size.
  3. Generate a SHA-256 checksum for each part and store the list beside the archives. A checksum cannot prove that Google included every upload, but it can prove whether your saved archive changes or whether two copies are byte-for-byte equal.
  4. Extract the archives into a new empty folder. Do not merge them into an older Takeout folder, because matching names can hide which export supplied a file.
  5. Open a sample from the beginning, middle, and end of the extracted video list. Check picture, sound, duration, and whether the file is the quality you expected.
  6. Compare the result with the owning channel’s Content list in YouTube Studio. Keep a note of private, unlisted, removed, or restricted videos that need separate investigation.
  7. Preserve at least two verified copies on different storage devices before removing an original project or closing an account.

Do not infer completeness from a particular folder name or CSV filename. Takeout can vary by language, selected data, and product changes, while large exports can span multiple archives. The channel’s own Studio inventory is the useful comparison; a generic ZIP viewer can list files but cannot certify that Google exported every item.

If videos are missing from Takeout

Check these in order:

  • Channel: switch to the Brand Account or channel that actually published the videos, then request a new export.
  • Selection: confirm that YouTube and its video data were included, rather than only history, subscriptions, or YouTube Music data.
  • Parts: return to the Takeout download page and make sure no numbered archive was skipped. Google says an archive link expires after about seven days and each archive can be downloaded a limited number of times.
  • Timing: Google warns that changes made between the request and archive creation may not be included. Request a fresh export after recent uploads or account changes.
  • Size: if an export will not download or open, request only YouTube and choose a smaller maximum archive size. This creates more parts, but each part is easier to retry and verify.
  • Account policy: ask the Workspace administrator whether Takeout is allowed for the school or work account.

Do not delete the channel while an export is still being prepared or while discrepancies remain unexplained. A successfully opened ZIP proves only that the ZIP is readable.

After the backup

Work from a copy, not the only verified archive. If you need a shorter excerpt, the local video trimmer accepts a video file from your device and keeps it in the browser. Its fast mode shows the actual keyframe-aligned boundaries; exact mode re-encodes the chosen interval. Neither mode connects to YouTube or changes the archived source.

Keep the Takeout request date, channel identity, archive-part list, checksums, and your manual Studio comparison together. That small receipt is more useful than a green “complete” badge from a viewer that cannot see the state of your YouTube account.
