YouTube Shorts size

Every guide says 1080 by 1920 at 9:16. YouTube itself publishes no pixel size for a Short, only square or vertical, three minutes, and 1080p max.

Search for the YouTube Shorts size and every result gives you the same pair: 1080 × 1920, at 9:16. The AI answer at the top says it. The guides say it. The resizers built to it say it.

YouTube does not say it. Read on September 10, 2026, no page in YouTube’s own Help center publishes a pixel size for a Short, and none publishes 9:16 as a requirement. What YouTube publishes is a shape class and two limits: square or vertical, up to three minutes, a maximum of 1080p.

That is not a technicality. The difference between a published number and a published rule changes what you should build to, and it changes what happens to your upload.

What YouTube actually publishes about a Short

All four pages read September 10, 2026. There is no width, no height, and no ratio beyond the word “vertical” anywhere in them.

“Square or vertical” is a range, and it is doing real work

The phrase is easy to read past as vague. It is not vague — it is a boundary, and it is the boundary that decides what your upload becomes.

Anything from 1:1 down to 9:16 and narrower is square or vertical, and all of it qualifies. 4:5 qualifies. 3:4 qualifies. A 1:1 crop of a landscape clip qualifies. YouTube is not asking for 9:16; it is asking for “not wide”, and then it sorts your video accordingly.

This is why the rule matters more than the number. On YouTube, aspect ratio is not a styling choice that affects how a video looks. It is the switch that decides whether the thing you uploaded is a Short or a regular video — different surface, different feed, different audience. The Understand three-minute YouTube Shorts page dates that behavior to uploads from October 15, 2024 onward for standard channels, and December 8, 2025 for Official Artist Channels.

Get the ratio wrong in the wide direction and you have not made an ugly Short. You have made a long-form video that will never appear in the Shorts feed.

Where 1080 × 1920 actually comes from

It is not invented, and it is not wrong. It is inferred, and the inference is reasonable.

YouTube says a Short may be uploaded at “a maximum resolution of 1080p”. YouTube’s own resolution page then defines what it means by 1080p, in a table of recommended resolutions that is explicitly for 16:9: “1080p (HD): 1920x1080”. That page also states plainly that “The standard aspect ratio for YouTube on a computer is 16:9.”

Turn that 1920 × 1080 on its side and you have 1080 × 1920. Read “1080p” as 1080 on the short edge, which is the only reading that makes sense for a vertical video, and the number everyone repeats falls straight out.

So the figure is a sound conclusion drawn from two YouTube pages. It is simply not a specification YouTube has published, and the guides that present it as one are presenting their own arithmetic as Google’s word.

The single place 9:16 does appear in Google’s own documentation is in Google Ads Help, about Shorts ads: “Vertical videos, with a 9:16 aspect ratio, are best suited for the Shorts format.” Note what that is — a preference for advertising assets, in a different product’s documentation, phrased as “best suited” rather than required. Even there, no pixel dimensions are given.

What the player does with a shape it did not expect

YouTube’s resolution page has one sentence about vertical video, and it is worth reading before you agonize over the exact ratio: “For some video and device aspects ratios like 9:16 vertical videos on computer browsers, YouTube may add more padding for optimal viewing.”

Padding, not cropping. On a desktop browser a vertical video gets bars around it rather than having its edges taken away. That is a display decision made per device, and it is the extent of what YouTube commits to telling you.

Which numbers should you actually use?

9:16 at 1080 × 1920, for almost everyone. Not because YouTube requires it, but because it is the tallest common shape, it fills a phone screen edge to edge, it sits exactly at the “maximum resolution of 1080p” ceiling YouTube does publish, and it is what the rest of the vertical world — Reels, TikTok — already uses. Building to it costs you nothing. TikTok’s documentation has the same gap in its own shape: the 9:16 is in its ad specs, and the TikTok video size guide quotes what it publishes for posts instead.

Do not exceed 1080p. This is the one genuinely published ceiling, and going over it buys nothing. A 4K vertical export is a larger upload that YouTube caps anyway.

Do not go wider than 1:1 unless you want long-form. That is the real cliff, and it is the only one with a stated consequence.

Do not stretch to reach 9:16. A 4:5 clip is square-or-vertical and is a perfectly valid Short. Distorting it to hit a ratio nobody published is worse than shipping the shape you have.

Getting a video to a Short’s shape

Change the ratio, not the picture. Going from 16:9 to 9:16 means most of the frame’s width has to go. The video aspect ratio changer takes the target shape and shows what falls outside it before it renders, so the loss is a decision rather than a surprise. It runs in the browser; the file is never uploaded anywhere.

Choose which part survives. The subject is rarely dead center, and a centered crop of an off-center subject is how a good clip becomes a bad Short. Crop video lets you place the rectangle yourself and reads the finished file’s dimensions back to you, rather than reporting the numbers you asked for.

Three minutes is a published limit. It is one of the few hard figures YouTube states, and going one second over means the upload is not a Short. The video trimmer cuts to the exact times you type and reports the length of the file it wrote.

Size, after shape. Once the geometry is settled, video compressor brings the byte count down at a quality you pick, leaving the dimensions alone.

Phone footage is often not MP4. A clip straight off an iPhone arrives as MOV. MOV to MP4 rewraps it without touching the picture.

Checklist

  1. Square or vertical. That is YouTube’s actual published requirement, and 1:1 is the wide edge of it.
  2. Three minutes or less, or it is not a Short.
  3. 1080p maximum — the one published ceiling. 1080 × 1920 sits exactly on it.
  4. 9:16 by choice, not by rule. It fills the screen; nothing breaks at 4:5.
  5. Never widen past 1:1 unless you actually want a long-form video.
  6. Expect padding, not cropping, when a vertical Short is watched in a desktop browser.
