What this YouTube thumbnail maker commits to
Every download is 3840 pixels wide and 2160 tall, or that same 16:9 shape at half or a third of it. There is no height field, no aspect menu and no free canvas, because the instant those exist the page can no longer promise anything. 3840 × 2160 is what YouTube recommends for a video thumbnail, taken from their help article on custom thumbnails and read on September 7, 2026, alongside their requirement of a JPG or PNG and a minimum width of 640 pixels.
The smallest option here is 1280 × 720, which is a third of the recommendation and therefore pixel-for-pixel the same proportions. It is offered because it was the recommendation for years and a great many templates, overlays and habits are built around it. It is still comfortably above the stated minimum. It is simply smaller than what YouTube now asks for, and the thumbnail is also the preview frame inside the embedded player, where small shows.
Two ceilings, not one
The number repeated everywhere is 2 MB. YouTube’s page states that figure for uploads from the mobile app and a separate 50 MB for uploads from a computer. That single fact explains a whole category of confusion: a thumbnail accepted on a laptop and refused on a phone is not corrupt and is not the wrong shape, it is over one ceiling and under the other.
Because of that the receipt after each download reports the exact pixel dimensions and the byte count, and says which ceiling the file has passed when it has passed one. JPEG is the default format here for the same reason. A photographic thumbnail is normally many times lighter as JPEG than as PNG at identical dimensions, and at 3840 × 2160 a PNG can clear 2 MB without looking any better. Flat color and lettering are the case where PNG wins, and it is one selection away. Should a file of the right shape still weigh too much for where it is going, the image compressor searches for a quality that lands under a byte target you name, leaving every pixel dimension exactly where it was.
Margins are yours, since YouTube names none
Rival editors like to print a crisp outline across the frame and call it the safe area. Ask where the figure came from and the trail stops. What YouTube actually documents is resolution, format, weight, ratio and a content policy; nothing in it concerns edges or spacing.
What is observable is that a duration badge sits over the lower-right corner on most surfaces, and that a partly watched video draws a red resume bar along the bottom edge. Those are facts about a layout, not commitments, and layouts move. The dotted rectangle here therefore starts switched off and moves wherever you drag it, purely as a rehearsal on glass; the encoder is handed the picture and the type and never learns the rectangle existed. Fitting a photo into 16:9
Very little of what people photograph is 16:9. A phone shoots 4:3, a mirrorless camera 3:2, a screenshot whatever the window was. So an incoming picture is scaled until it reaches all four edges and the surplus is discarded, and you decide which surplus: drag inside the frame, nudge it with the arrow keys, or use the sliders underneath. Padding the sides with bars instead would be worse, because bars encoded into the file are bars YouTube treats as part of the picture and shows on every surface forever.
The editor is not an approximation of the download. A single drawing routine produces both, taking a scale factor as its only difference, so what you are looking at is the file at a smaller size rather than a preview of it. That is also why the type control is a percentage of the frame height rather than a pixel count: switch from 3840 to 1280 and the lettering shrinks with everything else instead of suddenly filling the frame.
Text is drawn in typefaces already sitting on your machine, which is why no font downloads before you type. Where a photograph is too busy underneath, the shading switch drops an even veil over the entire frame — not a gradient behind the words, which reads as a box, but a uniform darkening that lets light lettering hold up across the whole image.
What is not here
There are no ready-made designs to pick from, no stock photography, no logo library and no account. Searches for thumbnail templates are looking for finished artwork somebody designed, and dressing an empty frame up as a template would waste an afternoon. There is likewise no switch for Shorts or podcast artwork: YouTube asks for 2160 × 3840 and 1:1 respectively, and those are different shapes rather than different sizes, so a menu would bury the only decision that actually matters.
Four neighboring jobs have their own pages. What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube recommends 3840 by 2160 pixels for a video, in a 16:9 shape, as a JPG or PNG, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. That recommendation was read from YouTube Help on September 7, 2026, and 3840 by 2160 is what leaves this page by default. The familiar 1280 by 720 is still accepted and is offered here as well, because it is exactly a third of the recommendation and therefore the identical shape.
Why does the file size limit depend on my device?
Because YouTube states two of them. Uploading a video thumbnail from the phone app, the ceiling is 2 MB; from a computer it is 50 MB. A 6 MB thumbnail is therefore perfectly acceptable on a laptop and refused on a phone, which looks like a broken image if nobody tells you. The receipt after each download says which ceiling, if any, the file has passed.
Where is the safe area?
There is not one. YouTube publishes requirements for resolution, format, file size and aspect ratio, plus a policy on what a thumbnail may depict, and nothing at all about margins. The duration badge does cover the lower-right corner on most surfaces and the resume bar runs along the bottom, but those are observations of a layout that YouTube changes without notice. What about Shorts and podcast thumbnails?
Different shapes, so different pages if they are ever built. YouTube asks for 2160 by 3840 in a 9:16 shape for a Short, and a 1:1 square for a podcast playlist. Putting all three behind a menu here would hide the only decision that actually matters, since artwork built for one shape cannot be rescued into another by scaling.
Does the photo leave my computer?
No, and there is nowhere on creatorvalet.com that would take it if it tried. Reading the file, compositing the frame and writing the finished bytes are three steps your own browser performs, and the saved file is produced by that same tab. Quit the tab and the whole working copy goes with it.
