Find the thumbnails YouTube actually has

Paste a video, Shorts or youtu.be link. Nothing is checked until you press the button.

The ID is extracted here. On click, this browser contacts i.ytimg.com directly.

How this YouTube thumbnail downloader works

Every ordinary YouTube video has an eleven-character video ID. It is the value after v= in a watch URL and the first path segment in a youtu.be link. Shorts, live and embed URLs place the same ID elsewhere in the path. This page recognizes those public URL forms in your browser, then asks YouTube’s image host for the known thumbnail variants belonging to that ID. It does not scrape the video page, sign in to an account or request a YouTube Data API key.

YouTube does not promise that every size exists for every upload. The downloader therefore checks the actual HTTP response and decodes each successful image before drawing a result card. A card shows measured pixel dimensions and downloaded file size, not a dimension guessed from the filename. Failed variants remain out of the grid and are named below it, so a missing maximum-resolution file does not turn into a broken download button.

Which YouTube thumbnail size should you download?

The YouTube Data API thumbnail reference documents five logical sizes. Default is normally 120 × 90 pixels, medium 320 × 180, high 480 × 360 and standard 640 × 480. Maximum resolution is the largest version available for that video, but both standard and maximum resolution are optional. Those documented labels appear beside the measured result so you can distinguish YouTube’s size category from the bytes the server returned today.

Choose the largest available image when you need room to crop, inspect details or preserve an archive of your own artwork. Choose a smaller one only when the destination explicitly wants a small raster and you do not plan to enlarge it later. A 120-pixel image cannot be restored to the original by upscaling. If a thumbnail needs to meet a file-size limit after download, use the image compressor; if a publishing system prefers a modern format, use JPG to WebP while keeping the original JPG.

Download a YouTube Shorts thumbnail without guessing the ID

A Shorts URL such as youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID points to the same family of public thumbnail files as a watch URL. Paste the full link and this page extracts the ID for you. The image file can still be landscape even though the video is vertical, and YouTube may crop a creator-selected frame differently on particular surfaces. YouTube’s current thumbnail help also explains that vertical videos can receive an automatically generated 4:5 presentation on some mobile pages and that Shorts offer fewer custom-thumbnail controls than long-form videos.

The result here is therefore the public source image returned for the video, not a screenshot of every YouTube layout. If you need the exact appearance of a card in search, subscriptions or a mobile feed, compare the downloaded source with that live surface. If you own the source video but need a completely different moment, the video frame extractor can capture a decoded frame from your local video file instead.

The request is direct, but it is not offline

URL parsing happens in this tab and the pasted value is never posted to CreatorValet. Once you choose Find thumbnails, however, the browser must contact i.ytimg.com. YouTube consequently receives the video ID, your IP address and the normal request metadata needed to serve an image. The returned bytes stay in this tab as temporary object URLs, and the Download button saves a new local copy. Reloading or leaving the page releases those temporary URLs.

Collect channel thumbnails over time with the bookmarklet

A channel URL alone is not a key-free list of every upload. YouTube’s official method first resolves the channel’s uploads playlist and then reads its paginated playlist items, and every Data API request requires an application key or OAuth credential. This tool does not hide a shared key in the page or pretend that an RSS feed containing only recent entries represents the full channel.

The Saved collection mode takes a browser-native route instead. Its bookmarklet runs only when you invoke it on youtube.com. It recognizes the current video and video cards that YouTube has already loaded, deduplicates them by ID and keeps the collection in YouTube’s own browser storage. On an infinite channel grid, choose Scan to page end; run it separately on Videos, Shorts or Live when the channel divides those types into different tabs. You can add another page tomorrow without losing today’s list.

Analyze & pack opens this downloader and transfers the manifest directly between the two browser tabs. CreatorValet then checks the thumbnail variants, keeps the best public image found per video and creates one ZIP with a CSV receipt. The receipt records video ID, title, source page, collection time, selected variant, dimensions and byte size. The collection on YouTube remains intact until you explicitly clear it, and a Download manifest button provides a portable JSON backup.

This boundary is intentionally visible beside the button. A tool cannot truthfully verify a remote public image while claiming that no network request occurs. It can avoid a relay server, avoid account access and wait for your explicit action before making the direct request. That is what this downloader does.

A public thumbnail URL is not a reuse license

Being able to view or download an image does not establish who owns it or what you may do with it. A thumbnail can combine a creator’s photography, illustration, typography, logos and third-party material. YouTube’s copyright overview notes that original creative work is normally protected when it is created; permission, public-domain status and legal exceptions are separate questions. This page cannot decide whether a proposed reuse is licensed or fair.

The safe default is to download thumbnails you own, have permission to use, or need for a clearly lawful purpose such as managing your own channel. Keep the source-video link shown in the result so you can trace where the file came from. If the goal is merely to study a layout, recording dimensions, colors and composition may be enough without republishing the image.

Questions

How do I download a thumbnail from YouTube?

Paste a public YouTube watch, Shorts, live, embed or youtu.be link and choose Find thumbnails. The page checks YouTube’s five standard image variants, shows only the files that respond successfully, and reports each image’s actual pixel dimensions and file size. Choose Download JPG on the version you want. No YouTube account or API key is required.

Why is the maximum-resolution thumbnail missing?

YouTube does not guarantee that every video has every thumbnail size. Maximum-resolution and standard versions can be absent, especially for older or low-resolution uploads. The tool checks the real image responses instead of displaying a broken maxres link. High, medium and default variants may still be available.

Can I download a YouTube Shorts thumbnail?

Yes. Paste a URL containing /shorts/ and the tool extracts the same eleven-character video ID used by YouTube’s image service. A Shorts thumbnail can be stored as a landscape image even when YouTube presents the video vertically, and YouTube may crop or replace it on particular mobile surfaces.

Can I collect thumbnails from a whole YouTube channel?

Use the Saved collection mode and drag its collector to your bookmarks bar. On a YouTube channel tab, the bookmarklet adds video cards already loaded on the page; its Scan to page end action follows the infinite scroll. You can run it again on Videos, Shorts, Live, playlists or individual videos over many days. The deduplicated collection stays in YouTube-side browser storage until you clear it. Analyze & pack returns the manifest to this tool, selects the best public image per video, and creates one ZIP plus a CSV receipt.

Can I reuse somebody else’s YouTube thumbnail?

A successful download is not permission to republish the image. Thumbnails can contain copyrighted artwork, photographs, trademarks or a creator’s original design. Use your own thumbnail, obtain permission, or establish that your particular use is lawful. This tool cannot determine ownership or license rights.

Is the video URL uploaded to CreatorValet?

No. The video ID is extracted in this tab. After you press the button, your browser requests the public image variants directly from YouTube’s i.ytimg.com host so it can verify dimensions and create the download. CreatorValet receives neither the pasted URL nor the image.
